June is objectively the best month and full of reasons to celebrate, it begins in Gemini season, it’s Pride month, and it’s the Summer Solstice – it’s also my birthday!

The Summer Solstice (Litha in terms of the festivals of the Wheel of the Year) is Wed, Jun 21, 2023 3:57 PM BST in the Northern Hemisphere. It occurs when one of Earth’s poles has its maximum tilt toward the Sun, creating the longest day and the shortest night.

June Nature Notes

Wild roses are starting to unfurl their papery petals in the hedges now. Mostly seen in shades of pink, their open centres with sparkling golden stamens encourage valuable pollinators to feast. On warmer days, the scent drifting from a wild rose hedge can be intoxicating.

June’s the beginning of strawberry season in the UK. The glossy white flowers beloved by bees, will quickly begin to develop into baby fruits.

Strawberries are super easy to grow yourself, even if you don’t have a garden.

Pots or hanging baskets are all you need for a bumper crop of luscious, gleaming berries.

Just remember to water them in dry spells, and give them the odd boost with tomato feed.
