Welcome to May!
Hey <<First Name>>, welcome to another Sapling Tarot Newsletter, I’m so grateful that you’re here.

Merry Beltane! (Or Walpurgis, or May Day, or Calan Mai, or whatever your culture’s equivalent!)
This festival marks roughly half way between the Spring Equinox and the Summer Solstice, the days are getting longer and the weather (generally) feels a bit more optimistic. The blossoms are blossoming and bulbs are blooming. This is the time of year that cattle are taken out to the greener, sweeter summer pastures.
Beltane is the mirror festival of the more well known Samhain (Halloween), it is believed that the veil between the magic and mundane worlds is thinner, during Samhain that is usually thought to be the living world and the world of our ancestors, but for Beltane it’s our world and the world of the Fae (faeries).
For my fellow tarot nerds, last year I created a Beltane tarot spread which can be found here.
May Nature Notes
The tall magenta spires of foxgloves start ascending rapidly skywards in May. Bees climb right inside the freckled throats of the flowers, and you can often see the whole flower tower tremble with a bee’s excited humming. Bees love foxgloves because the flowers open over a long period of time ensuring a reliable source of nectar for them.

Swallows start appearing in early May, ready to build their delicate cup shaped nests from mud, which they line with grass and feathers. Weather folklore suggests that if swallows are flying high, then it will be sunny and warm, but if the swallows start swooping low over fields, it’s likely to be cooler and wetter.

Cheerful, glossy golden buttercups spring up readily in hedges, gardens and verges. They’re much loved by pollinators and can be spotted easily by them because of their reflective petals. Buttercups are able to track the sun too, and will always face towards it.

Tadpoles will take around 14-16 weeks to develop into frogs. If you have even a tiny outdoor space, you could make a container pond to attract wildlife—you’ll be amazed at how quickly frogs will find it and make it their home. Next year, you could even have frogspawn and tadpoles in your garden.

This month’s Nature Notes come from copywriter and tiny garden consultant Rowan Ambrose. You can read more of their work here.
